A Fresh Perspective for the New Year

The start of a new year always invites reflection. Not the loud, all-or-nothing kind, but the quieter kind that asks us to pause, take stock, and decide what still feels true for where we are now.

"This moment, standing in front of one of our design boards filled with ideas, textures, and possibilities, feels like a perfect metaphor for the season." - Jessica Bandstra
Every new project begins this way: gathering inspiration, editing thoughtfully, and making space for what’s next. But just as important as what we add is what we choose to release.
A fresh perspective doesn’t require a complete overhaul. More often, it’s about clarity. Letting go of what no longer serves you (whether that’s a habit, a mindset, or even a room in your home that no longer reflects your life today) and welcoming what feels aligned with the next chapter.
As you step into the new year, here are a few gentle ways from Dogwood Proper to reset with intention:

Edit before you add
Before chasing something new, take a moment to simplify. In design, we often remove before we refine, and the same approach applies to life. Start small. Choose one drawer, one surface, or one habit to let go of. Creating space, even in subtle ways, allows what truly matters to come forward with clarity and purpose.

Honor where you are now
Your needs evolve, and your spaces should too. The home that worked five or ten years ago may no longer fit the rhythms of your life today, and that’s not a failure, it’s growth. A helpful place to start is by noticing the spaces you avoid or feel disconnected from. Those moments of friction often point to where small, meaningful changes can make the biggest difference.

Find inspiration in small moments
A fabric sample, a color story, a quiet morning. A fresh perspective often begins by noticing beauty in the everyday moments we tend to overlook. Nature is a constant source of inspiration, from the way sunlight shifts across the room to the soft colors of a winter sunrise. Taking time to pause and reflect, even something as simple as starting a gratitude journal or jotting down what feels inspiring, allows clarity to settle in and shape something meaningful.

Release the pressure to “get it all right"
The new year isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress, curiosity, and giving yourself the freedom to change your mind as you go. One helpful way to approach this is by setting intentions instead of resolutions. Choose a word, a feeling, or a simple focus for the year ahead and let it guide your decisions without the pressure of getting everything right. Growth rarely happens in a straight line. It unfolds through trying, adjusting, and showing up again with a little more clarity each time.
At Dogwood Proper, every home we design begins with this mindset: embracing what’s ahead while respecting what has shaped you. The most meaningful transformations, whether personal or spatial, happen when we thoughtfully let go of the old and make space for the new.
Here’s to entering the year with clarity, optimism, and a perspective that feels beautifully your own.
