Some homes are designed to feel brand new. This one was designed to feel as though it had always been there.
Southern Classic is a new build in West Meade, a neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee, created by Dogwood Proper for dear friends beginning a new chapter together. Newly married and blending a family of four college-age daughters, this couple wanted a home that felt welcoming to everyone while also reflecting this next season of life as newlyweds and soon-to-be empty nesters.
The goal was clear from the beginning: a home rooted in Southern tradition, built with organic materials, and designed to feel timeless rather than trendy.
And because Dogwood Proper was involved from the early stages of the new build, the design went well beyond furnishings and finishing touches. From construction and floor plans to material selections, lighting, hardware, furnishings, and the final styling, every layer had a role in making a brand-new house feel established, personal, and ready to be lived in.
How Do You Make a New Build Feel Timeless?
For Southern Classic, timeless did not mean making everything neutral or playing it safe.
Instead, the home balances classic architectural details with natural materials, rich wood tones, marble, unlacquered brass, statement lighting, collected furnishings, and moments of saturated color.
The kitchen is a perfect example. Cream cabinetry and Calacatta marble create a light, classic foundation, while the substantial wood island brings warmth to the center of the room. Unlacquered brass plumbing and hardware add another layer, alongside Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances selected for the hardworking heart of the home. We will always try to talk clients into unlacquered brass and marble: both patina, and both look better at year five than on install day.
In the living room, a stone fireplace anchors the space between stained wood built-ins, with a linen-shaded iron chandelier overhead and a burl wood coffee table at the center. It is the lighter, everyday counterpart to the deeper rooms beyond.
It is a traditional design, but not the kind that asks you to be too careful around it.
Why Use Color Drenching in a Traditional Home?
Color drenching carries one rich color across the walls, trim, and architectural details, which adds depth and lets a traditional room's architecture take center stage. And sometimes the room calls for a little conviction.
The dining room is wrapped in blue from walls to trim to the painted mantel, a dramatic backdrop for a crystal and brass chandelier, traditional furnishings, windowpane drapery and a patterned host chair.Â
The same deep blue carries into the pantry, wrapping the walls, trim, and cabinetry around a coffee station and glass-front uppers.
Instead of competing with the home's classic architecture, the saturated color emphasizes it. Trim, molding, windows, and the fireplace become part of the composition rather than simply outlining it.
And then there is the whiskey room.

How Did the Whiskey Room Become the Most-Used Room in the House?
Dark, enveloping color, leather seating, a fireplace, and soft lighting turned the room no one planned to use into one of the rooms the homeowners use most.
Funny enough, no one expected it to. During construction, the homeowner's childhood best friend, who also happened to be the contractor, joked that they would never use the room.
We had other plans: a smaller room that felt like a rich, cozy respite, somewhere that invited you to settle in rather than simply walk past. The dark color envelops the space, while the traditional artwork, warm wood, layered textiles, a fireplace, and intimate lighting make it feel collected and comfortable.Â
When the paint first went up, the client panicked. It felt too dark before the rest of the room had come together, but we encouraged her to trust the process. We knew once all the elements were in, it would be perfect.Â
Today, the room they would “never use” has become one of the most-used spaces in the house, equally suited for morning coffee and evening cocktails and hard to leave during cold weather. We will happily take that win.Â
What Makes a Whole-Home Design Feel Cohesive?
Cohesion does not require every room to look the same.
Southern Classic moves between light and dark, tailored and relaxed, quiet moments and rooms with a little more drama.
What connects them is the attention to material, proportion, architectural detail, and the way the family actually uses the home.
Marble appears alongside warm wood. Brass brings continuity and patina. Traditional silhouettes are layered with expressive lighting and textiles. Each room is allowed its own personality without losing sight of the larger story.
That is particularly important in a new build, where hundreds of individual decisions eventually need to come together as one home.

The Dogwood Proper Take
A timeless home is not created by removing personality from the equation. Quite the opposite.
It comes from choosing materials with staying power, respecting the architecture, making room for the way people really live, and knowing when a room can handle a little more character.
Southern Classic was designed for a family entering a new chapter, but with the intention that the house would never feel tied to one particular moment in time.
Brand new. Rooted from the start. And properly theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Southern Traditional interior design?
Southern Traditional design draws from classic architecture, craftsmanship, natural materials, collected furnishings, and rooms designed around gracious everyday living. In Southern Classic, those ideas are paired with expressive color, warm woods, marble, brass, and tailored furnishings for a home that feels rooted without feeling stuck in the past.
Can an interior designer help during a new home build?
Yes. An interior designer can be involved well before furnishings are selected. For Southern Classic, Dogwood Proper's involvement began during the new-build process and extended through the home's materials, finishes, lighting, furnishings, and styling.
What is color drenching in interior design?
Color drenching uses the same or closely related color across multiple surfaces and architectural elements within a room rather than limiting color to the walls. In Southern Classic, rich color helps emphasize the architectural character of spaces like the dining room and whiskey room.
